Interview with Tiffany Ironside of Ironside Yoga Follow her at @ironsideyoga on Instagram
When I started exploring the concept of happiness not as a destination but as a practice, I was almost immediately lead to yoga. Yoga can have a profound effect on our happiness by means physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Yoga is an excellent place to start if you aren’t sure how to start your intentional happiness journey or anywhere along the way to take your journey deeper. Yoga can make such a profound difference in everyone’s life that I knew it deserved its own dedicated post in this series. Having only dabbled off and on (pathetically I might add) in the subject myself I did not feel qualified to write about it, so I contacted someone who is.
Tiffany Ironside is a roaming yoga instructor and founder of Ironside Yoga. Tiffany provides services such as, large and small studio classes, one on one or small group private classes, kids yoga, yin yoga, restorative yoga, and more. She also offers, energetic healing, tarot readings, spiritual work and is currently working on a skin care line. On top of all of that she is a wife, and mother of two wonderful children, who she homeschools.
Tiffany is an inspiration to me personally and interviewing her was an exciting opportunity! The interview lasted hours so I will paraphrase her answers for this blog. Please know these responses do belong to Tiffany and have been reviewed by her for accuracy. I know you will enjoy her insights as much as I did! Let’s get into it!
I am not a medical professional, or personal trainer. But I am a busy Mom with a demanding job, a long commute and a million excuses. Exercise has never been high on my priority list but when I started this journey to find true happiness, there was no ignoring it plays a big part in a well-balanced life. If you have ever seen a doctor for any reason you have probably received an ear full about the health benefits of exercise.
I am not here to tell you what exercises to do to get swole. I am still learning what works best for my own workouts. I am here to pass on the lessons I have personally learned while incorporating physical fitness into my own life. Physical fitness, approached in a positive way, can have a profound impact on personal happiness. As I mentioned in my last Happiness post, we need to change our way of thinking to love ourselves as we are now, but we should still also work to improve our health and well-being wherever we can.
Here are my Do’s and Don’ts for physical fitness! Take what you like and leave the rest!
Not a fan of running? Don’t have an hour each day to dedicate to complicated workout routines or DVDs? Get easily bored with slow paced motions?
Don’t worry you aren’t alone. I too have a hard time finding a workout I can stick with. I have recently discovered a solution to my exercise problem and I must say it’s fantastic! If you are like me and need a fresh alternative I suggest trying a HIIT workout!
What is a HIIT workout you ask? “HIIT” stands for “High Intensity Interval Training”. This type of workout is made up of intense bursts of all-out effort exercise followed by active recovery periods. The reason this works is it keeps your heart rate up and burns fat at a faster rate than other more steady workout routines. Some of my favorite things about this type of workout is the fact that it increases your metabolism, keeping your body burning fat long after you stop exercising! It is also the most convenient workout I’ve ever done! Ok now I just sound lazy… But seriously, no equipment is needed, just your own body and space to move around. It also only takes 20-30 minutes for better results than you would get with typical hour or two routines. One of my biggest obstacles with working out was fitting it into my schedule but now its so easy to take 30 minutes and feel good about myself all day!
I was skeptical at first but as someone who couldn’t stick with a routine for longer than two weeks I am amazed to find myself still motivated two months later! I had to share! There are a lot of websites and HIIT routines out there in the internet but if you want to see what got me hooked check out Lucy Wyndham-Read on YouTube! I’m obsessed with her HIIT routines and she gives alternative moves for beginners as well so regardless of your level of fitness, she’s got you covered!
In a society where we all spend more time sitting in front of computers, smartphones and TVs than we do moving each day it’s important to find the exercise that is fun and engaging for you personally and build it into your daily life!
New Year Resolution #1: Exercise three days a week
January 1st we feel motivated and determined to better ourselves but how do we keep that motivation flowing all year long? Here are my five tips for sticking with your exercise resolution and how I plan to put it to work in my own life!
2015 is going to be an exciting and significant year, I can just feel it! We have so many things to look forward to in my family this coming year!
The ever present possibility/hope of getting pregnant (3rd New Year wishing for that dream)!
My husband, Denver graduates from the Art Institute in the spring!
For mentioned graduation will hopefully lead to a more enjoyable and full time job for the love of my life!
Denver may be heading to Texas to visit his cousin Mike (click here to see my earlier post about Mike)!
My (favorite, shhh) cousin will be getting married in October!
Just to name a few!
Lets Talk Goals! When it comes to New Year Resolutions there are three types of people.
People who make resolutions but never stick with it
People who refuse to make resolutions at all
The rare people who make resolutions and actually stick with it all year
Without getting into the psychology of fear of failure vs fear of success, I will just say most New Year’s I am type #1. I love planning out all of my goals for the next year but by February I usually forget all about my resolutions and go back to my old ways… This year, I am going to try very hard to become type #3 and stick with my resolutions for once! A few of these may be a little cliché but they are important to me… so there? I have never been the kind to refuse to make resolutions, I feel it’s vital to a happy life to constantly try to improve yourself. It doesn’t matter when you start the process of bettering yourself but my thought is, why not start on the first day of the year?
So, without further ado… My Resolutions Are… Drum Roll Please…
Exercise 3 days a week!
I am currently 15 pounds heavier than I would like to be. I don’t like the way I look. I don’t like the way I feel. I don’t like that I’m sore and winded from walking up one flight of stairs… I just have to come to terms with the fact that I’m not 18 anymore. I can no longer be in excellent shape with no effort what so ever. *Sigh* I already miss those days… But enough is enough! It is time to take control of my health and regular exercise is step #1! Come back next week to see my detailed exercise plan!
Eat 3 servings of fruit and 3 servings of veggies every day!
I already eat pretty healthy, thanks to my husband. My husband has a chronic health condition that makes it necessary for him to eat very healthy. Since I don’t make separate meals for each of us I end up eating healthy because he requires it. Unfortunately even with the healthy meals I’m preparing I typically get one serving of fruit with breakfast, sometimes one serving of veggies with lunch and one serving of veggies with dinner. That just isn’t enough! Come back the week of January 16th for my detailed plan!
I have an anxiety condition. Over the years I have worked very hard and have gotten better at managing my anxiety over the little day to day stuff. While I don’t get over whelmed or panic about the little stuff as much anymore, which allowed me to stop taking a daily anxiety medication, I struggle every day with my stress level and I carry medication for panic attack situations. In our struggles to get pregnant we have been frustrated by the test results giving no indication of any problems. My doctor (and everyone else I know) has advised me that stress can play a huge part in infertility and knowing myself it wouldn’t surprise me if that is what is standing in the way of our dream coming true. Come back the week of January 23rd for my detailed relaxation plan
I’m an accountant without an ounce of natural creativity in her body. Married to an ARTIST who lives, breaths and sleeps creativity! I have always been jealous of creative types and have longed for the gift of creativity for as long as I can remember. While discussing my desire for creativity with my husband he became inspired to help me accomplish my impossible goal (I would just like to note that he got a little too excited about the idea… I’m a little afraid…). Come back the week of January 30th for my (husbands?) detailed creativity plan!
